1. IEM signal chain: 4 gain stages

Unlike wired loudspeakers, an IEM signal passes through four gain stages:
- Mixer Bus Send: The master fader of the Aux Monitor. (Set to 0dB Unity).
- Transmitter Input (Input Sensitivity): The control on the transmitter unit (the desk/rack unit).
- RF Transmission: The wireless transmission itself.
- Bodypack Volume: The volume knob on the bodypack receiver.
Goal: keep the signal as strong as possible at each stage without clipping, so the S/N ratio (Signal-to-Noise) is maximized.
2. Transmitter Sensitivity: the most important knob

Most professional IEM transmitters (Sennheiser G4, Shure PSM) have an Input Sensitivity (or Gain) menu.
- Common mistake: Setting the Sensitivity too low (e.g. -10dB) while sending a hot signal from the mixer (+10dB) → Distortion at the transmitter input (Transmitter Clipping).
- Correct procedure:
- Play music or pink noise from the mixer at the maximum expected level (peak).
- Watch the meter/LED on the IEM transmitter.
- Adjust the Sensitivity so the LEDs only flash yellow, and absolutely never hit red (Clip).
3. Bodypack: don’t turn it to Max!
The headphone amplifier inside the bodypack is usually low-power and battery-operated.
- If the artist turns the bodypack Volume to 10/10, the amp will be driven to full output, draining batteries quickly and increasing background hiss.
- Sweet spot: Instruct artists to keep Volume at about 6/10 or 7/10. If they need more level, increase gain at the mixer or the transmitter—don’t push the headphone volume further.
4. Limiter: the safety strap

If someone accidentally rips a jack out or a mic falls, a very large transient can be sent straight into the artist’s ear. The consequences can be severe.

- Do not turn it off. Pilot Tone is the “handshake” between transmitter and receiver that prevents interference. If you disable it, when RF is lost the earphones can produce a loud pop that may cause hearing damage.
